Product Spotlight: JL Audio AP600/6

JL Audio AP6006

A few decades ago, amplifiers designed for marine applications were not only huge but also inefficient and, crucially, not truly waterproof. Things have come a long way since then, and JL Audio has recently introduced a new series of products specifically for high-performance marine and powersport applications. In this spotlight, we’ll look at the new JL Audio AP600/6 amplifier.

Introducing JL Audio AP Amplifiers

Before we dive into the specifics of the AP600/6, let’s look at the features common to the entire AP Series of products. These amplifiers were designed to provide ultra-reliable performance in marine, powersport and even motorcycle applications. They are completely free of analog controls that might require removable panels or plugs. How did they accomplish this? The amplifiers use a digital signal processor for sensitivity, crossover, bass boost, infrasonic filter, and polarity adjustments. The up and down arrow and Mode/CH buttons on the front panel, combined with a simple dot-matrix display, make it easy for your installer to complete the configuration process. With the amplifier completely sealed, it has an IP67 water and dust intrusion rating.

The AP Series includes four products: the four-channel AP300/4, rated for 50W x 4 into four ohms or 150W x 2 into a pair of four-ohm bridged loads; the monoblock AP300/1, which can deliver 300 watts into a two-ohm load; and the impressive AP600/6, a staggered power six-channel amp. There is also an amp called the AP200/4BT. This amp is rated a 4 x 40 watts into four ohm and includes a BT audio streaming receiver and a controller to adjust volume, track selection or source (BT or Aux input).

JL Audio AP200/4BT
The JL Audio AP200/4BT is a four-channel amp with Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP.

JL Audio AP600/6 Specifications

The six-channel AP600/6 is rated to deliver 50 watts per channel into four ohms for the four main outputs and 100 watts per channel to channels five and six. These last two channels can be bridged to provide 300 watts into a single four-ohm load. At 2 ohms, the main channels deliver 75 watts, and channels five and six deliver 150 watts each. The amp isn’t designed to drive a two-ohm load in mono. This is an ideal solution for marine applications with four main speakers and two tower speakers, or could be used with two towers and a subwoofer – just to name a few configurations.

Additional specifications include a CTA-2006-D-compliant signal-to-noise ratio of better than 70 dB when referenced to 1 watt of output from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Frequency response is listed as being 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a tight tolerance of 1 dB. Idle current is between 1 and 1.5 A, and dark current is specified to be under 1 mA. The six-channel amp has low- and high-voltage signal input ranges that accept 0.2 to 2 or 0.8 to 8 volts RMS.

All three pairs of channels can be run full-range or have high- or low-pass filters applied. The filters in the amp use second-order -12 dB/octave slopes and are adjustable from 20 to 500 Hz. The bass boost is centered nice and low at 37 Hz and can boost around this frequency by up to 18 dB. The AP600/6 has an adjustable infrasonic filter on channels five and six that’s adjustable from 20 to 50 hertz with a second-order slope. This amp doesn’t have a polarity reverse adjustment in the menu.

The amp has an Easy Tune mode that allows it to work with select Fusion source units with DSP and the Fusion Audio smartphone app.

JL Audio AP6006
A dot-matrix display on the front panel makes setting up the amp easy for your installer.

Connections and Installation

Electrical connections are on pigtails at either end of the amp. The left side has six pairs of 18-AWG speaker-wire connections, along with a remote turn-on connection and an 8-AWG connection. These connections are 10 inches long. The right side has three pairs of RCA jacks and a factory service USB port connection. The amp doesn’t have a built-in over-current protection device, so your installer should install a 70-amp fuse on the end of the power wire. Four-AWG should be run to the battery connections to ensure efficient operation.

Footprint-wise, the AP600/6 measures 11.81 inches (30 cm) long, 5.9 inches (15 cm) wide, and is 1.86 inches (4.7 cm) thick. These dimensions exclude the wires and their injection-molded strain reliefs. The amp mounts using the provided M4 x 35mm (approx. #8 x 1-3/8) fasteners that pass through the corners of the cast aluminum heatsink.

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate PM400X4

Rockford Fosgate PM400X4

Contrary to how some marine audio amplifier manufacturers approach the design of their products, an amplifier designed for a boat isn’t just painted a different color. From coatings on the circuit board and the finish on the heatsink to the materials chosen for the electrical connections, a marine amp needs to be designed from the ground up for reliability. In this spotlight, we’ll look at what makes the Rockford Fosgate PM400X4 a perfect solution for your marine audio application.

Specifications of the Rockford Fosgate PM400X4

The PM400X4 is a four-channel amplifier rated to produce 50 watts of power into four 4-ohm loads and 100 watts into 2-ohm loads. Each pair of channels can be bridged to provide 200 watts of power into two 4-ohm loads. The bridged configuration would be ideal for a pair of subwoofers or wakeboard tower enclosures, such as the 10-inch Rockford Fosgate M2WL-10H.

Performance-wise, Rockford Fosgate rates the amp as having a bandwidth of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a tolerance of 1 dB. Most companies use a 3 dB rating. This is a Class A/B amplifier, so you know the frequency response with real dynamic loads is going to be ruler-flat to well beyond where humans can hear. Distortion is specified as less than 1%. We know from our testing that these amplifiers are capable of better than 0.02%, putting them in line with the cream of the crop.

Rockford Fosgate PM400X4
The PM400X4 is a four-channel Class-AB amplifier designed for marine applications.

Design Features

The PM400X4 is based on a cast aluminum heatsink that measures 11.03 by 7.76 inches and stands 2.38 inches tall. The heatsink is finished in a light grey powder coat that’s not only durable but also resistant to fading under prolonged UV exposure.

Speaker, signal, and power connections are made along the front edge of the amp. Terminal blocks with set screws accessible from the top of the amp ensure secure and reliable connections for up to 4-AWG power and ground wires and 8-AWG speaker connections. The terminal blocks use stainless steel hardware to prevent corrosion. The amp has four RCA input jacks that are slightly recessed into the front panel.

Rockford Fosgate PM400X4
Custom-tooled terminal blocks ensure that power and speaker cables are held in place securely.

Signal Processing and Controls

As you can see from the photos, there’s a removable panel on top of the amp that provides access to the controls. Each pair of channels has a sensitivity control that’s adjustable from 150 millivolts to an impressive 12 volts. The RCA input jacks have a balanced differential circuit design. Not only does this help eliminate noise, but it means your installer can connect the output of a factory radio or small amplifier directly to the PM400X4 without the need for a line output converter.

Each pair of channels has a crossover function switch that selects between high-pass, low-pass, or full-range operation. The associated frequency control is adjustable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz, and the crossovers have a -12 dB-per-Octave slope with a Butterworth alignment.

Additionally, Rockford Fosgate included a Punch EQ2 control with each pair of channels. Your installer can dial in up to 18 dB of boost at 45 Hz and 12 dB at 12.5 kHz to give your music a little kick or sizzle. In a marine application, the added high-frequency output can be very beneficial to systems where the speakers are mounted low under the seats.

Rockford Fosgate PM400X4
All the controls and adjustments are concealed behind a removable panel on the amplifier’s top panel.

Keeping Things C.L.E.A.N.

The PM400X4 includes Rockford Fosgate’s C.L.E.A.N. distortion-detecting circuitry on each channel. The amp features an input clip indicator LED beside the RCA jacks to optimize signal-to-noise performance. Each pair of channels has an output clip indicator to let your installer know when the amp reaches maximum output. Setting up an amp with the C.L.E.A.N. circuitry saves time and eliminates clipping, which can add unwanted high-frequency content and damage tweeters.

Element Ready Design

We’ve mentioned the UV-resistant powder coat finish and the stainless-steel terminal hardware. These are just part of the Element Ready design of the PM400X4. Additionally, the circuit board has a two-part epoxy coating that helps eliminate corrosion from exposure to salt, as you’d find near the ocean. The epoxy, combined with hot melt adhesive around significant components like the power supply capacitors, ensures that vibrations and impacts won’t damage the circuit board.

Product Spotlight: PMX-1R Marine Remote

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R

Installing a marine radio in your boat is the best way to improve your day on the water. If your boat has bow seating, a swim platform, a cuddy, or a full cabin, adding a wired remote to the source unit at the helm makes it easier to control the music. The marine audio experts at Rockford Fosgate offer several wired remote solutions to upgrade their marine multimedia receivers. Let’s check out the PMX-1R wired remote control.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R Design

The PMX-1R is a compact wired remote with a rotary encoder, eight buttons, and a 2.7-inch color display. Its functions mimic the controls on the PMX-2, PMX-3, and PMX-5CAN radios. The remote also works with the PMX-8BB and the older PMX-5 source unit.

The remote measures 4.2 inches in height, 4.5 inches wide, and only 2.5 inches deep. Its shallow depth makes it a popular choice for instrument clusters where space behind the mounting panel is an issue. In those applications, a source unit like the nearly identical-looking PMX-3 could be installed in the galley or nav station.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R
The PMX-1R doesn’t require much mounting depth, making it ideal for mounting in the hull of a boat.

The display features the same TFT wet-bonded design used in the PMX-3 source unit. This construction method allows for great visibility and vibrant colors in bright conditions.

At the center of the remote is a rotary encoder with a large knob that serves as the system volume control. The knob can be pushed to access additional functions. Speaking of additional functions, the eight rubber-coated buttons provide direct access to track or channel selection, source selection, and even dimmer control. Knowing how Rockford Fosgate fanatics think, dedicated SUB + and SUB – buttons provide direct access to adjust the subwoofer output. Things couldn’t be more intuitive.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R
The wet-bonded 2.7-inch color display is easy to read in harsh lighting conditions.

Remote Wiring and Installation Options

Your installer will find a multi-pin DIN connector on the remote’s rear. This plug connects to any Rockford Fosgate marine source units mentioned above using the PMX16C 16-foot, PMX25C 25-foot, or PMX50C 50-foot extension cables sold separately. Multiple remotes can be used with a single source unit with the addition of the PMXYC Y-cable. Rockford Fosgate marine radios will support up to three remotes and as much as 100 feet of cable in the installation. That’s not 100 feet per remote, by the way.

The remote mounts through a three-inch hole in whatever panel you choose. Your installer can clamp the remote with the aluminum support bracket. Alternatively, they can use the four stainless steel mounting screws to affix the remote from the front. A trim ring is provided to conceal the mounting hardware, giving the remote a clean and tidy appearance. A rubber seal ensures water won’t get into the boat through the mounting hole in either solution.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R
The PMX-1R includes several installation options to ensure reliable operation.

Element Ready™ Design

Crucially, all Rockford Fosgate marine source units and remotes feature their Element Ready™ design. Where most companies stop with weather resistance ratings like the IPX6 found on the front panel, things go several steps further with the PMX-1R and its brethren. The remotes are tested in a UV light exposure chamber, which mimics years of prolonged sun exposure. The materials and design must remain colorfast and not turn chalky, fade, or dry out. Further, salt fog testing ensures the radios and remotes can be used in saltwater without concern over corrosion.

Rockford Fosgate takes things even further with its vibration and impact testing. When crashing over the waves, your boat can experience impacts of well over 5 G’s, with emergency situations exceeding 7 G’s. All products carrying the Element Ready™ symbol are tested on a vibration bench to ensure the design and internal components can withstand these stresses. When the Product Specialist you are working with tells you that purchasing a Rockford Fosgate marine source unit and remote is an investment in quality, they have the proof to support that statement.

Unlimited Installation Applications

Aside from marine applications, recreational vehicles, motorhomes, travel trailers, campers, and toy haulers are popular applications for Rockford Fosgate marine source units and remotes. A radio can be installed in the dash, and then additional remotes can be added in the kitchen, master suite, or even outside to control a set of marine-grade speakers. If you have a four-seater side-by-side, a PMX-1R could be added to a Stage 5 Polaris Ranger audio system to give the backseat crew as much control as the driver.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R
The PMX-1R can be used almost anywhere to make controlling an audio system easier.

Upgrade Your Marine Radio with the Rockford Fosgate PMX-1R Today!

Whether you are starting to build an audio system from scratch or looking to upgrade an existing installation, adding a remote like the PMX-1R is an excellent solution. If space is limited, the PMX-0 remote without an LCD display is another option. To find the best solution for your application, drop by a local authorized Rockford Fosgate retailer today. You can find a shop near you using the online locator tool on their website. As always, be sure to follow our fanatical friends from Tempe on Facebook, Instagram, and, of course, YouTube.

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate PMX-3

Rockford Fosgate PMX-3

When it comes to marine and powersports source units, Rockford Fosgate has a solution! We previously looked at the affordable PMX-1. In this spotlight, we will check out the Rockford Fosgate PMX-3 to see why it’s an excellent choice for your boat, side-by-side, UTV or even a custom car or hot rod. Let’s check it out!

PMX-3 Design and Construction

The PMX-3 media receiver fits into a three-inch round opening. Its square face measures 4.5 inches wide and 4.2 inches tall. The face extends 1.5 inches forward, while the chassis reaches 2.9 inches behind the mounting surface.

The PMX-3’s face includes a full-color 2.7-inch TFT display, designed for clear visibility in bright sunlight. Rockford Fosgate enhances sunlight readability by using an optical wet bonding process. A large rotary encoder with an integrated button sits at the center of the lower section, allowing adjustments for volume, zone volumes, and menu settings. Surrounding the knob are buttons for menu, source, track selection, tracking, play/pause, and subwoofer-level access.

Importantly, the radio holds an IPX6 water intrusion rating, meaning it can endure splashes or hose washes without damage. Rockford Fosgate’s Element Ready™ design also tests for salt fog exposure (ASTM B117) and accelerated UV exposure (ASTM D4329). Along with impact and vibration testing, this unit withstands the harshest abuse from both trails and Mother Nature.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-3
The control panel on the PMX-3 features a clear color display and an easy-to-use rotary volume encoder.

Features of the Rockford Fosgate PMX-3

The Rockford Fosgate PMX-3 is packed with of source options. First, there’s a digital AM/FM receiver with Weather band channels. The tuner includes RDS information display. A USB connection is provided on a pigtail to let you connect a memory stick up to 32GB in capacity to play MP3, WMA and FLAC files. You can also connect a smartphone to charge it at up to one amp of current. The PMX-3 includes wired USB support for Pandora on Apple devices, but Android users can use the integrated app over Bluetooth.

Wireless audio streaming over Bluetooth 3.0+EDR is built into it, so almost any mobile device can serve as the DJ. You can play music from that device, stream your favorite podcast or listen to music from Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music or YouTube Music.

Support for SiriusXM Satellite radio is included. Your installer can add an SXV300 receiver and antenna to provide uninterrupted entertainment almost anywhere in North America. The input for the SiriusXM receiver can be repurposed as an auxiliary input if you haven’t purchased a tuner module.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-3
The PMX-3 mounts through a 3-inch hole and is the same size as a speedometer or tachometer in many marine dashboards.

Audio and Connectivity Features

The amplifier built into the PMX-3 is rated to produce 25 watts of power into 4-ohm speakers and 50 watts of power into 2-ohm speakers. If you want more from your audio system, there are two sets of four-volt preamp RCA output jacks. These outputs can be configured as front and rear or front and subwoofer with subwoofer level control. High- and low-pass crossovers are built-in to optimize the internal amplifier or filter the preamp signals. The unit has source-specific level controls, so you can fine-tune everything to be the same volume – sweet!

A seven-band equalizer with several presets is included to let you fine-tune your audio system to your mood or listening environment. Being a Rockford Fosgate product, they’ve included a Punch EQ circuit. To give the system some extra sizzle, dial in up to 18 dB of boost at 45 Hz and 12 dB at 12.5 kHz..

Your installer can add up to two wired remote controls to the PMX-3. You could have a PMX-3 at the helm of your boat, then add a PMX-1R in the cuddy or galley. A PMX-0 on the swim platform is great when the family is playing in the water of the stern. The PMX-3 and its remotes also make a great audio solution for campers and motorhomes.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-3
Adding a PMX-1R or PMX-0 makes using the PMX-3 on a large boat or motorhome easy.

Camera Input and Power Connections

One feature you won’t find in many units in this class is camera input. If you have an ATV, a rear camera is perfect for maneuvering. The same applies to backing into your camping spot if you have a motorhome. You could even add a camera on the bow of a boat to help make docking easier. The camera input includes a reverse trigger that your installer can connect to a switch for manual activation.

The PMX-3 is commonly known as a two-wire unit. Typically, most radios have ground, power, and accessory connections, with the power connection constantly tied to the battery. The issue with this design is that even when the radio is off, it creates a small but continuous drain on the battery. If your boat or side-by-side sits unused for a week or more, this drain can deplete the battery. The PMX-3 addresses this by eliminating the need for a constant power connection, requiring only an accessory and ground connection. Additionally, the unit’s integrated flash memory stores all your audio and tuner settings, ensuring you don’t lose them when the power is off.

Speaking of batteries, the PMX-3 includes a digital voltage gauge. This allows you to monitor the electrical system voltage so you’ll always be able to start the vehicle and get home.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-3
The two-wire power design of the PMX-3 helps ensure it won’t drain the battery in your boat, side-by-side or ATV.

Premium Marine and Powersport Source Unit

There are many gauge-style radios on the market these days. Picking the right one isn’t easy. If you want a unit with all the premium source options, flexibility for expansion with external amplifiers and remotes, and durability that’s hard to beat, drop into your local Rockford Fosgate retailer and ask about the PMX-3. You can find a retailer near you using the locator tool on their website. Be sure to check out their Facebook, Instagram and YouTube feeds and channel to stay up to date with their latest product releases.

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate PMX-1

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1

As much fun as it is to check out top-of-the-line products, sometimes the right solution is surprisingly affordable. The marine and powersport audio experts at Rockford Fosgate offer a full line of digital media receivers. In fact, there are five stand-alone units, plus an add-on multi-zone unit with several controller options. There is, indeed, a solution for every application. We will highlight the affordable but full-featured PMX-1 Punch-Series marine-grade receiver in this spotlight.

PMX-1 Physical Design

When we talk about source units, we usually discuss single or double DIN units designed for cars and trucks. The PMX-1 chassis, designed for marine and powersports applications, is intended to be flush-mounted on a flat panel. Rockford Fosgate has several vehicle-specific audio upgrade kits for side-by-sides that include mounting provisions for this unit.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1
The RZR14-STG1 audio kit for Polaris RZR vehicles includes a PMX-1, speakers, and a mounting pod that fits on the top of the dash.

The face of the PMX-1 is 4.5 inches wide and 4.2 inches tall. It protrudes 1.5 inches forward of the mounting surface, and the chassis and heatsink extend 2.9 inches rearward. The kit includes a rubber mounting gasket to ensure the face seals perfectly against the mounting surface.

The radio can be installed in one of two ways. If you have a dash with a round three-inch mounting hole, your installer can mount the radio using the supplied aluminum U-bracket, just like a speedometer or tachometer in a boat. Alternatively, the kit includes a metal mounting bracket that can be positioned behind the mounting surface, and four screws secure the display to the plate and sandwich on either side of the mounting surface. An included trim ring conceals the mounting hardware once in place.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1
Two mounting options are provided to maximize installation options.

The radio is rated to have an IPX6 water intrusion rating, so you can blast it all day long with a hose or let it get hit by waves. This is crucial in Rockford Fosgate’s Element Ready™ marine, motorcycle, and powersport products. Further, the radio has been tested to exceed prolonged UV and salt fog exposure requirements. Few, if any, other brands talk about the durability of the overall design. Rockford Fosgate punishes their Element Ready™ products with impact and vibration testing to ensure you’ll always have tunes when on the trails or ripping the waves.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1
Whether on the water or the trails, the Element Ready™ PMX-1 is ready for anything you can throw its way.

User Interface Design

The first feature you will see when you look at the PMX-1 is its 2.3-inch dot-matrix monochrome display. While this looks simple, the display is constructed with a wet-bonded process that makes it easy to read in bright sunlight. The glass screen over the display has a 9H hardness rating, so it’s scratch-resistant. Many competing products use plastic over the display.

A sizable rotary encoder in the center of the front panel allows for volume adjustments or navigating through different menu settings. Four buttons on either side of the encoder provide direct access to source selection, track adjustment, play/pause, menu access, and a dimmer control. Bass heads will love that there are subwoofer + and – buttons on the front panel.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1
The layout of the front panel is intuitive and organized. Importantly, it’s durable.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1 Source Options

You have four options for playing music from the PMX-1. The built-in terrestrial radio tuner includes AM and FM reception capabilities. It also has a weather band tuner for those near larger lakes or the ocean.

You can connect a 32GB or smaller USB memory stick to the USB port to play MP3 or WMA files. The system supports up to 255 folders with a maximum of 1,000 songs.

The radio has stereo RCA input jacks on the back as a third option. So, if you want your installer to connect it to a laptop, DVD player, or similar device, it’s ready to go.

Finally, the PMX-1 includes a Bluetooth receiver. The system uses Bluetooth 3.0+EDR and supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) version 1.3. You can connect almost any smartphone and play music stored on it or stream audio from Pandora, iHeartRadio, or Spotify. Album and artist information will scroll across the screen if your device supports sending this information over Bluetooth.

Power, Preamp, and Installation Considerations

The radio includes a four-channel amplifier rated to produce 25 watts of continuous power into four four-ohm speakers with less than 1% THD+N. It also has two sets of RCA jacks on pigtails, rated to produce up to 2 volts of output.

The radio includes a three-zone crossover set to high or low-pass modes with 60, 80, or 120 hertz filter frequencies. The crossovers work on the built-in amplifier and the preamp signals. For the second set of RCA outputs, your installer can select between the rear and subwoofer output functions in a nearby menu.

The radio has a seven-band graphic equalizer with Flat, Rock, Classic, Acoustic, Dance, Electronic, and Hip-Hop presets. A custom EQ mode allows you to fine-tune the system to suit your audio system design or listening preferences. Of course, Rockford Fosgate includes their famous Punch EQ in the PMX-1. You can dial up to 18 dB of boost at 45 Hz and 12 dB at 12.5 kHz.

Power conservation can be a concern for marine and powersports vehicles, so the PMX-1 includes a battery voltage display, so you can keep track of things. The radio uses non-volatile memory to store all setting information. As such, it only requires an accessory and ground power connection. There is no clock, so your installer doesn’t have to hook up a wire likely to drain the vehicle battery. If you turn the radio off but leave it powered, it draws under two amps of current. At the other end of the spectrum, the radio has a 20-amp fuse, so ensure your installer uses large enough wiring to power it.

Rockford Fosgate PMX-1
The PMX-1 was designed with a 12-pin Molex connector for speaker and power connections.

Compact and Durable Audio Solution

If you are looking for a reliable, easy-to-use radio for a boat, side-by-side, ATV, or jet ski, the Rockford Fosgate PMX-1 is an excellent solution. If you’ve had a craving to build a portable boombox from an old ammo can, the PMX-1 is perfect for that as well. You can pick up a PMX-1 at any authorized Rockford Fosgate dealer. You can find a dealer near you using the locator tool on their website. Be sure to follow our friends from Tempe on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to keep up with new product releases and the events they attend.

Testimonials

Nice staff and honor their work

Audio Crew did some work for me about 2yrs ago. A speaker they installed wasn't working properly. They checked it out and problem was a corroded wire. They fixed the problem and told me no charge for the repair. Very nice of them to do that as problem wasn't their fault in the first place. Audio Crew have a nice staff and honor their work.

VERY HONEST and PROFESSIONAL company

I purchased a 2019 used car for my wife and she wanted a remote started installed. I went to Audio Crew, who I had dealt with before, got a price and made an appointment. We dropped the car off the night before, for the appointment with a request that they call us when ready. Early the next morning, I received a call telling me that there was good news!! The car already had a remote starter which was programmed into the factory remote. We only need to press the "lock" button three times to star the car!! The dealer who sold us the car was not aware of that, it was a pleasant surprise to us and a $350 savings. THANK YOU to a VERY HONEST and PROFESSIONAL company.
